What is the examiner looking for?

Here is the email that I showed you in MY class.  If you get bored over the holiday why not try watching a TV Drama and have a pop at a question!!!!!

Wednesday 6th April

Television Drama and the Representation of Regional Identity.

In the last class you were given different Soap Operas to research.  Each Soap Opera was based on a different area of England.  Your job was to prepare a presentation (using still and moving images) about how the Soap represented that region.  This is a possible question that you could be asked in the exam.  You had to talk about Camera Shots, Angle, Movement and Composition; Sound; Editing and Mise en scene.  This is what you came up with.

Your Homework Task (for a chocolate!)

If a Soap Opera was to be written based on this area (Rural Suffolk) what might it be like?  Write one paragraph about how this area would be represented - try to link it to the four textual analysis areas!

Editing examples

Graphic Match: a similar shaped object or person is transformed into another completely different object or person with different characteristics.

Insert: a shot of something that came up in character conversation.

Long take: a shot of long duration

I Can't Work Out How To Comment!!!

I defined: Shot/reverse shot: This involves moving the shot from one thing to another. It is often used in conversation to film reactions to what has just been said. Fade In: This is used to begin a scene. The picture tends to appear from black or the title sequence. :P ;)

The definitions...

Jump Cut: A jump cut is where the camera quickly jumps from one shot to the other to cut out time, for example when a character is running towards the camera, it would go from a long shot to a mid shot to show the continuity of it.

Fade out: Fade out is a transition where the shot slowly disappears by using a colour, mainly black to make it, eventually a blank screen. This is normally used at the end of a programme or scene.

Wipe: Wipe is another transition where the characters/objects in the shot get wiped away from either angle of the screen to get from one shot to another.
